HEMPHILL, TX – Members of the board of directors of the Patricia Huffman Smith NASA Museum ‘Remembering Columbia’ wish to express their sincere condolences upon the passing of longtime Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox.
He passed away Thursday, February 13, 2025 at the age of 75.
Maddox had served as sheriff since 2001 and was a central figure in the response to the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy in February 2003, serving as co-incident commander in Hemphill. He was also among the first people on the scene of the March 2003 helicopter crash in March 2003 during the search and recovery efforts.
‘Remembering Columbia’ Museum curator Belinda Gay called him a great man and a true friend.
“We are very saddened by the loss of our friend Tom. The PHS NASA Museum and its board of directors are grateful for the relationship we shared with Tom. He was someone we could depend on for support no matter the circumstances. We will forever be grateful for his leadership and dedication to our museum and our community.”
Gay recalled Sheriff Maddox had been a tremendous supporter of the museum since its opening in 2011.
“He always supported us in all our endeavors. From providing security when the need arose for special occasions and events, to guidance and sound advice to the museum. He was always available in assisting and supporting our museum. We were blessed and honored to be a recipient of his kindness, generosity and support.”
Funeral arrangements are pending.
