Special Events

We are dedicated to creating science and technology learning opportunities for children and adults with a calendar of special events throughout the year.

The ‘Remembering Columbia’ Museum and its Friends of the Museum are responsible for planning a year-round calendar of programming, fundraisers, and activities to involve supporters and stakeholders.

STS-107 Anniversary

Since 2004, the first anniversary of the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy, the Sabine County Columbia Memorial Committee (now the PHS NASA Museum board of directors), has organized a memorial program each year on February 1 to honor the crew of the STS-107 mission and the two volunteers who died in the recovery effort that followed.

The program is held at either the ‘Remembering Columbia’ Museum or a Hemphill church. Other activities are typically planned to coincide with the anniversary. In years past, these have included a robotics competition, memorial walk, student art exhibitions, guest lectures, panel discussions, or NASA traveling exhibits.

Galactic Gala

Our annual black-tie Galactic Gala is an opportunity to mix and mingle with members of the community and special guests for a good cause. Organized by Friends of the Museum, this themed fundraiser typically includes a catered meal, live music, a silent auction, and a guest speaker.

Golf Tournament

Friends of the Museum organizes an annual golf tournament benefiting the ‘Remembering Columbia’ Museum. Held at various golf resorts and courses in Toledo Bend Country, the two-person scramble is a relaxed outing that regularly draws 25+ teams vying for cash and prizes.

Other Events

Throughout the year, our calendar remains full with special events, including: book signings, after-hours socials, special lecturers, Night at the Museum, Ham radio meet-ups, documentary screenings, model rocket launches, art exhibitions, space mission launch watch parties, and much more.
